Since the birth of Viagra in 1996, men have been adorning their cape’s by adding Viagra to their party regiments. The best example of this that I have seen comes from the move “Boys and girls guide to getting down”. In the scene, the girl recognizes that the amount of cocaine that she and her boyfriend are consuming just might impair his performance, so she grinds up a little blue pill into their blow. Pure genius.

Cannabis users may not have that luxury. Viagra (sildenafil) is broken down by cytochrome P450 enzymes, and according to the study, “there is the possibility that elevated plasma concentrations of sildenafil could occur with coadministration of known inhibitors of” these enzymes. This could cause adverse side effects.

In one case study highlighted in the journal of Clinical Cardiology, there was a 41-year-old man who experienced a heart attack after mixing marijuana and Viagra the night before. Though the doctors couldn’t prove that a drug interaction caused the heart attack, it is suspected so they wanted to warn other physicians to consider the enzyme-inhibiting side effects of pot when they prescribe Viagra.

In plain English: It turns out marijuana compounds can inhibit certain liver enzymes called cytochrome P450 enzymes. What that means is that Viagra will not break down as readily in the blood of someone who’s been burning or munching on edibles.

However, I have never even heard of someone who has even remotely had this problem. In fact, it’s the opposite. Weed and sex are amazing together, depending on the strain of course.
